About ArtStart

So, how and why was ArtStart created? This unique program was designed in partnership with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) to support literacy in third and fourth grades. ArtStart teamed teaching artists with classroom and arts teachers in a classroom residency, connecting the arts to core curriculum goals and creating a learning experience that tapped into students’ natural curiosity and varied learning styles.

ArtStart provided lesson plans that supported literacy and writing as well as professional development support through its four-day Summer Workshop. ArtStart also provided a Teaching Artist Roster and Showcase for teachers to book local, qualified artists committed to educating through their art form.

ArtStart was funded by an Arts in Education Model Development and Dissemination grant from the U.S. Department of Education. This site is, in part, designed as a dissemination vehicle to share tools and best practices developed during the grant period.

By using the arts to approach core skills such as identifying the main idea in a story or adding significant details to a personal narrative, even disengaged and struggling students found success!
